The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American Football team established in 1976 in Seattle, Washington, presently playing home games at Qwest Field. The Qwest Field was earlier known as Seahawk stadium. The team had earlier used the Kingdome from 1976 to 1999 and Husky Stadium 2000 and 2001. The Husky stadium was used for three first half home games in 1994 as the Kingdome was under repairs. The Qwest Field is well known for its design to amplify the spectator’s noise. The team headquarter from 1976 to 1985 were in Kirkland and summer training camps were held at Eastern Washington University at Cheney. In 1986, after a new headquarter was completed at Kirkland the training was held there till 1996 then team returned to Cheney in 1997. In 2008 new facility near Lake Washington in Renton with four full size practices was started for training of the team.
The process to set up Seattle Seahawks was started in 1972 when a group of Seattle business and community leaders, announced that they want an NFL franchise in Seattle, Washington.
The first owner was Lloyd W Nordstrom representing the up market retail chain as a majority partner of consortium. However, he was not able to see his dream project through as on Jan 20,1976 he died of heart attack only months before Seattle Seahawks played first match.
The Nordstrom held majority shares till 1988 when it changed hands to Ken Behring & Ken Hofmann, who steered the team till 1996. The team was sold to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 1997. The nickname Seahawk was selected after a fan contest in which over twenty thousand entries were received suggesting over thousand different names.
The Seattle Seahawks has switched conferences twice in the post merger era; it is the only NFL team to do so. The Seattle Seahawks played in the NFC West in 1976 but joined AFC West next season. However in 2002, the team returned to NFC West as part of NFL after a realignment plan in which Houston Texan was also added. The team colors are Seahawks Blue, Neon Green, White & Dark Navy. The logo is Native American style hawk totem. The Mascot is Blitz and Taima the Hawk. The Cheerleaders are called Sea Gals. The team nicknames are the Hawks and The Blue and green.
The team’s best season was in 2005 with tally at 13-3 and worst season was in1992 with tally of 2-14. The team in its 33 years and has had 7 head coaches. The present coach is Jim Mora appointed for 2009 season onwards. The record of various coaches is as under

The team broadcasters are Warren Moon and Steve Raible and frequency is KIDO (710 AM).
The moments of glory have been in 1983 and 2005 when the Seattle Seahawks won the AFC/NFC championship. They also played in Super Bowl in 2005. They have won six divisional championships in the AFC West during 1988 &1999 and in NFC West for the years 2004, 2005, 2006 &2007. With 10 appearances in Playoff during 1983, 1984, 1987,1988, 1999, 2003,2004,2005,2006 & 2007. The Hall of Fame includes Franco Harris RB 1984, Carl Eller DE 1979, Steve Largent WR 1979-89 and Warren Moon QB 1997-98. The retired numbers include 12 Fans and 80 Steve Largent WR 1976 -89. The number 12 was retired as a tribute to Seattle Seahawks raucous fans as they made the Kingdome one of the loudest stadium. The Jersey with number 12 is worn by the Seahawks fans. In 2005 the fan again made a difference against New York Giant, the crowd noise was a largely responsible for 11 false start penalties that Giants committed.
The awards include Coach of the year to Jack Petra in 1978 and Chuck Knox in 1984. The awards for Defensive Player of the year were won by Kenny Easley S in 1984 and Cortez Kennedy DT in 1992. The offensive player of the year was awarded to Seattle Seahawks’ Shaun Alexander RB in 2005, who also won the NFL MVP in the same year.
The new season opens with a hope for Seattle Sky hawks with a new head coach and 33 year of experience behind them and with a record of 250- 266. The team has lost the Super Bowl XL in 2006 but won 6 divisional championships, 10 seasons playoff.
Writer and editor, Freddie Brister, is a former high school football coach of 25 years. His love of the game of football is reflected in his words and memories of growing up in the South and playing football in the back yard with his brother, cousins and neighborhood friends. His biggest thrill is watching former high school players he has coached play at the college level.
